 When choosing a gate for a lawn or garden, the material is the first consideration which must be made. Most gates are chosen to match with the fence in order to present a uniform appearance. However, a distinctive gate may not match with the fence but still look very pleasing to the eye. This is largely a matter of personal preference and there are no hard and fast rules. Shoppers for a garden gate should also decide what style of gate they would like, the height of the gate, if any locking features are necessary and how much maintenance they are willing to perform on the gate. Some gates that are made from painted wood must be re-painted every few years. Other gates are made from materials that may rust or patina over time and if this aged look is not desired, must be cared for appropriately. Safety gates must fit the desired area of the home. Most will adjust within standard hallway and doorway widths, but extra-wide or extra-narrow passageways may require a specialty gate. Whether or not the gate should be permanently installed is another consideration. While some gates simply fit in the passageway, others are permanently installed with hardware and are usually more secure. However, this requires more work and if the gate is ever removed, the surfaces to which it was installed will need to be treated. Safety gates also come in a multitude of different styles and colors to blend with any interior décor. They may be wooden, plastic or metal and may have a locking feature or “finger-safe” slow-closing hinges. Many safety gates also have additional safety features to make them extra secure and child-friendly.
